Since New Line Cinema picked up the film rights for the big screen adaptation of Gears of War, fans around the world have been contemplating which actors should bring Delta Squad to life.

Almost all silver-screen adaptations of video-game franchises have been pathetic and cheesy, to say the least, but for the Gears of War film, the parties involved are taking their time to make sure this one is done right.

New Line Cinema hired Stuart Beattie (of “Pirates of the Caribbean” fame) to write the first draft, with Marty Bowen and Wyck Godfrey producing via their Temple Hill banner. Now that the project has received a boost from Legendary Pictures, which is coming on board to co-finance and co-produce the film, it has been confirmed that Len Wiseman (“Live Free or Die Hard”) will direct using a final script written by Chris Morgan, who has confirmed the game is a prequel to the first game.

Today, we make a casting call and we pick our favorites—and in the comments section, you decide who gets the parts.

Marcus Fenix
Image

Few have given more and lost as much as Marcus Fenix. A promising soldier during the Pendulum Wars, Marcus saw everything change on Emergence Day. Marcus bravely fought the Locust for ten years, then, during an intense battle, he abandoned his post to rescue his father, Professor Adam Fenix. But he arrived too late. Marcus was tried for dereliction of duty and sentenced to 40 years in Jacinto Maximum Security Prison. Incarcerated for four years before being released to fight the Locust again, Marcus was later promoted to sergeant. Along with the rest of the Delta Squad, he won a battle for humanity by detonating the Lightmass bomb and destroying much of the Locust Hollow. With his reputation restored, Marcus now focuses on finishing the war against the Locust, and helping his friend Dom on his personal mission. But neither can be sure they’re ready to confront the truths they’ll find.

John Travolta

The actor who is truly a “phoenix,” John Travolta has flopped and resurged more times than Britney Spears, Lindsey Lohan and Paris Hilton combined. If you think we are crazy by considering Travolta for the role of Marcus Fenix, let us remind you that the same guy who was Tony Manero and Danny Zuko in the ’70s also became Vincent Vega and Chili Palmer. If there’s something that Travolta has proved throughout his career, it’s that he can become anything from a desperate attorney (“A Civil Action”) to a military detective (“The General’s Daughter” and “Basic”) to a laundress mother ashamed of her plus-sized figure (“Hairspray”).
Image

When we saw the pictures of Travolta wearing a bandana while promoting the film “Wild Dogs,” we asked ourselves “Why not?”

Bruce Willis

Marcus is all about the jaw, baby! Although Dale’s first choice was Stan Smith from “American Dad,” Willis will have to do for a live-action joint. The big BW definitely has a jaw that trumps even Bond’s Jaws, a.k.a. Richard Kiel. Willis can act, too, and has proven his mettle in sci-fi flicks (he was particularly brilliant in “The Fifth Element”).
Image

He’s gruff enough to pull off the war-is-hell parts of this role, yet a good enough actor to make the emotional parts sing.

Clive Owens

Owen made it onto our list mostly because Cliff Bleszinski has expressed he’d like to see this award-winning English actor playing Fenix. With a secondary role in “The Bourne Identity,” Owen became known in Hollywood after the release of “King Arthur” and “Derailed,” but it wasn’t until starring in “Sin City,” “Children of Men” and “Inside Man” that he gained much-deserved recognition.
Image

Anyone who has watched “Shoot ’Em Up” knows Owen wouldn’t have any problem carrying a chainsaw bayonet.

Dominic Purcell

The star of “Prison Break” is making a good career in the United States after his role as the title character in “John Doe,” but this British-born Australian actor has yet to prove he’s ready for big Hollywood blockbusters. His appearance as the villain in “Blade: Trinity” didn’t help.
Image

Dominic Santiago

A seasoned fighter who’s positive even in the darkest of hours, Dominic Santiago freed his best friend, Marcus Fenix, from Jacinto Maximum Security Prison and recruited him into Delta Squad. His battlefield intensity is rivaled only by his loyalty to Marcus. Dom’s friendly and outgoing nature lets him form relationships with factions throughout Sera, including the Stranded. He’s always quick with a joke, but Dom’s amiability masks an inner conflict…a conflict that makes the war against the Locust Horde, for him, far more serious—and far more personal.
Image

Antonio Banderas

Incorrectly considered a Latin American by most people, Antonio Banderas is a Spanish actor who was already a well-known star in the Iberian Peninsula (yes, Mr. Bush, Spain is a peninsula, not an island—do you know the difference, Mr. President?) before he started his career in Hollywood with “The Mambo Kings” and “Philadelphia.” Since then, Banderas has starred in box-office hits, including “Assassins,“ “Desperado,“ “The Mask of Zorro“ and the “Shrek“ films.
Image

Banderas, who started his career as a stage actor, has proven he can do drama as well as dual-gun action. Can he act up Dom’s funny side? If you’re not sure, just go to your local video store and rent “Two Much”—you’ll find the answer there.

Javier Bardem

Another prolific Spanish actor, this Academy Award-winning actor has starred in over two dozen films in Spain before becoming known stateside. Although he debuted in Hollywood as a Mexican crime lord in “Collateral,” it was his bad-ass performance as a sociopathic killer in “No Country for Old Men” that got him an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor, making Bardem the first Spanish actor to win such award.
Image

Like Banderas, you may ask yourself if he can handle Dom’s humorous comebacks. Well, after you see Woody Allen’s “Vicky Cristina Barcelona,“ you’ll realize Bardem is a character actor that can play any role.

John Leguizamo

Not only does Leguizamo have the looks to play Santiago, he also has that slick mix of seriousness and humor that’s perfect for Delta Squad’s second-in-command.
Image

I’m trying to overlook the fact that he was in “Moulin Rouge!,“ and that he’s done more Dora voiceovers than any B-list actor (he’s A-list in my book, but Hollywood is a cruel mistress) would normally admit to. But John’s work on “Rayman“ obviously shows that he can handle gaming voice, which should make a movie about gaming easy for this pro.

Benicio del Toro

After escaping the stereotype of drug dealer, Benicio del Toro broke into Hollywood with his performance in “The Usual Suspects.” With flicks such as “Traffic,” “Snatch,” “21 Grams” and “Sin City” this Puerto Rican actor proved he is a fine character actor.
Image

How funny can Del Toro be? If you are asking that question, you haven’t seen “Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.”

Augustus Cole

Private Augustus “Cole Train” Cole was once a successful Thrashball player, known for his hard-hitting and flamboyant style. After Emergence Day, Cole joined the military and brought that same grit and intensity to the battlefield. Cole has spent most of his military career alongside his friend, Damon Baird. As the two begin a new chapter in their military careers, one thing holds true: Nothing stops the “Cole Train,” baby.
Image

Terrance Howard

Terry Tate, on paper, makes the most sense here. He does Augustus in the game, and he can match the character model pound-for-pound with lean muscle mass (believe me on this one. He was at a Gears E3 party—he’s a HOUSE). But the big screen is all about star power, as recent comic-book movies have shown, so Tate is out and Howard is in.
Image

Sure, he’ll need to borrow Perlman’s suit from “Hellboy“ to get Cole’s build, but he’s a star that can bring a lot of personality to this role. He’s got the range to pull this one off too. Check out “Iron Man“ and follow it up with “Hustle & Flow“ for proof.

Terry Crews

A former NFL defensive end and linebacker, Terry Crews pulls out those funny faces and moves Augustus Cole is known for.
Image

Although most of Crews’ career revolves around these macho stereotypes, such as Latrell Spencer (“White Chicks“), Cheeseburger Eddy (“The Longest Yard“) and President Dwayne Elizondo Mountain Dew Herbert Camacho (“Idiocracy“), movies such as “Street Kings” and “Harsh Times” showed that Terry Crews can also play serious characters.

Cuba Gooding, Jr.

Few actors have the power to create a character with a distinctive voice or catchphrase that enters the collective unconsciousness. Al Pacino’s Tony Montana, Marlon Brando’s Vito Corleone, Robert De Niro’s Paul Vitti…and Cuba Gooding, Jr. You have seen “Jerry Maguire”— and undoubtedly yelled “Show Me the Money!” countless times.
Image

This Academy Award-winning actor has played different types of roles, showing he can do anything from drama to humor and, of all our options to play Augustus Cole, Gooding, Jr. is definitely the person with the best acting skills.

Lester Speight

Why not? An open mind would tell you that if Speight voiced Augustus Cole in Gears of War and its sequel, then he’d be the perfect one to do the character in flesh and bones.
Image

We have seen Lester in “Prison Break“ and “Norbit,” so we know that this former American football player can stand in front of a camera.

Damon Baird

Private Damon Baird is a dedicated tech-head and professional skeptic. In Baird’s world, if something can go wrong, it probably already has. His sarcasm can keep people at distance, which is why Baird prefers the company of machines. He believes in the Coalition’s cause, but he’s often frustrated with command decisions, and he took offense when Hoffman promoted Marcus Fenix to lead Delta Squad instead of him. Baird longs to one day command a squad of his own and sees his recent reassignment as a step in the right direction.
Image

Val Kilmer

I expect one of the important dynamics of the movie to be the covert antagonism that exists between Marcus and Damon. Baird will be a pivotal role, for sure, so it’s got to be filled with an A-List piece of talent…with an attitude. Val Kilmer can play this role blindfolded. The hacker/engineer of Baird is a cakewalk for Kilmer, as he pulled off the lead of Chris Knight in “Real Genius“ (1985 baby…represent!) with aplomb.
Image

Baird’s persnickety and somewhat confrontational side is a breeze for Kilmer as well—Doc Holliday anyone?

Neal McDonough

The first reason to consider Neal McDonough is his physical resemblance with Damon Baird. He has played secondary roles in high-profile Hollywood films, such as “Minority Report,“ and you’ll soon see him playing M. Bison in “Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li.”
Image

He definitely has what it takes to pull off those sarcastic comebacks Baird is known for, and his short but intense scenes in “88 Minutes“ make him a serious candidate for the role.

Dennis Quaid

Dennis Quaid is one of those underrated Hollywood actors who should have already won an Academy Award. He has played memorable roles in “Enemy Mine,” “Wyatt Earp,” “Frequency” and “Traffic.” We’ll see him soon in a movie (also penned by Stuart Beattie) called “G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra.“
Image

If Quaid can pull of the part of HAWK, then he can for sure play Damon Baird.

Mihn Young Kim

A firm, honorable soldier with a “by-the-book” leadership style, Lieutenant Kim led the mission to rescue Marcus Fenix from Jacinto Prison despite his reservations about a man regarded as a deserter. Kim paid the ultimate price when General RAAM killed him.
Image

Yun-Fat Chow

One of the most recognized superstars in Asia, this Chinese actor tried to start a career in Hollywood, but it wasn’t until the release of a film made in China (“Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon“) that he finally became a star on this side of the Pacific Ocean.
Image

Having worked in over 80 films, Yun-Fat Chow has what it takes to play Lieutenant Kim on the big screen. If the film is indeed a prequel to the first game, then Yun-Fat Chow could have more screen time than his digital counterpart…

Ken Watanabe

Of all the actors we considered for this role, Watanabe is the one who resembles Mihn Young Kim the most, not only for the looks, but also for the characters he played in “The Last Samurai,” “Batman Begins” and “Letters from Iwo Jima.”
Image

His Hollywood debut earned him an Academy Award nomination as Best Supporting Actor for his performance as Katsumoto in “The Last Samurai”; since then, Watanabe has enjoyed one success after another.

Masi Oka

If Kim makes the cut, we’re going to assume that he’ll be off’d in order to keep the movie’s story consistent with the interactive media on which it will be based. It’s hard to go with a big star here like Fat or Li—assuming that Mihn is going to get whacked—so an up-and-comer makes sense here. Might as well kill two birds with one stone: Hire “Heroes“ star Masi Oka to both play Mihn Young Kim and to work on the digital effects (he’s a former ILM artist) for the flick.
Image

Masi is already well known to sci-fi geeks, and his martial-arts background will help with the more grueling sequences of this mega-action thriller.

Victor Hoffman

A military man to the core, Colonel Victor Hoffman demands discipline and sacrifice from those under his command. Hoffman’s strict adherence to these ideals has caused him to cross swords with Marcus Fenix. Hoffman’s testimony helped convict Marcus of dereliction of duty, although Hoffman later promoted him to sergeant out of necessity. As the war with the Locust escalates, Hoffman must put aside his doubts and rely again on Marcus Fenix and Delta Squad.
Image

R. Lee Ermey

Hopefully Ermey is under contract already. Both Cesar and Dale agreed that there’s no better shoe-in for the battle-tested Colonel than a dude who can act, who was actually a military sergeant and was born during this country’s greatest war victory.
Image

Let’s hope that the movie gets a very mature rating so that the former drill instructor can dish it out in classic, “Full Metal Jacket“ style. Imagine this line, modified for expletives: “F%&$%ING UNNACCEPTABLE! 100% F%&$%ING UN-F%&$%ING ACCEPTABLE!

Tommy Lee Jones

Hoffman is a tough man, so tough that he is probably one of the few men in Sera who can yell at Marcus Fenix without getting chainsawed right after. There are only a few actors alive who can transpire this father figure without having to act it and Jones is one of them. He’s known for writing his own lines for movies and his cold “I don’t care” line in “The Fugitive” was one of those cruel comebacks only Jones can say without looking forged.
Image

If you have seen “The Hunted,” you know Jones would be a good Victor Hoffman.

Jack Nicholson

It’d be hard to have Jack Nicholson accepting a secondary role, but who is tougher than him? Nominated twelve times for an Academy Award, he won the Oscar three times. This guy doesn’t need to act when he plays a bad ass; he is bad ass, and visual encyclopedias should display Frank Costello, Dr. Buddy Rydell and Col. Nathan R. Jessep when displaying the meaning of the term “bad ass.”
Image

Next year, we’ll see Jack Nicholson returning for “Last Flag Flying,” the sequel to a 1973 film called “The Last Detail.” Can you guess the name of his character? Billy "Bad Ass" Buddusky.

Anya Stroud

As Delta’s Control contact, Anya Stroud guides Delta Squad through its mission to destroy the Locust. She provides vital intel and strategic advice to the squad in the field, and adds a calm, steady human voice during the most desperate of struggles. Thanks to a recent upgrade, the Jack bot now projects an image of Anya on a foldout video screen, so her connections to the team—and a certain sergeant—can grow even stronger.
Image

Scarlett Johansson

Both Julia Styles and Charlize Theron have proven that they could nail this role—Theron in “The Italian Job“ and Styles in “Save the“…okay, just joking…the “Bourne“ movies. They’re both beautiful, too, but I’m going to assume that a woman with slightly different on-screen assets will sit better with the gaming geeks that are going to flock to this one.
Image

Yes, the Gears movie needs T&A (see below for the A). Johansson and Dunst are a wash in the bewb department, but using the former Mary Jane as Stroud could prove too confusing for the all-nerd audiences that will be in attendance. (Future nerd blog report: “Gears” and “Spider-Man” crossover imminent!) Plus, Johansson’s tone, which sounds like a cute girl that has replaced her daily h20 intake with unfiltered Lucky Strikes—will be darn near irresistible as it fills up Delta’s earpieces.

Selma Blair

The winner of “The Best Kiss” MTV Movie Award after her crash on screen with Sarah Michelle Gellar in “Cruel Intentions,” Blair has jumped from playing supporting roles to prominent ones, such as law student Vivian Kensington in “Legally Blonde” and the third roommate in “The Sweetest Thing.” But we are sure you’ll recognize Blair for her nerd-favorite role of Liz Sherman in the two “Hellboy“ films.
Image

Since we don’t know much about Anya other than her enigmatic stare at Marcus Fenix in Act 1’s Trial By Fire, it remains to be seen what’s up with this character and her importance in the Gears of War universe.

Jessica Biel

One of the sexiest women in the world, Jessica Biel is more than a pretty face. For obvious reasons, movie directors call Biel to fill in roles of beautiful vixens, but in “Home of the Brave” she proved she doesn’t need her physical attributes to pull out a good performance.
Image

We have seen her many times surrounded by tough men and wearing military outfits.

Maria Santiago

Maria Santiago once lived a normal life with her husband and family. That changed on Emergence Day when Locust destroyed their home and murdered their two young children. Maria and Dom fled to Jacinto, but the damage was done. With her children gone and her husband spending more and more time on the frontline, Maria surrendered to her grief. She vanished, leaving no word on her plans. Dom has dedicated himself to uncovering the truth about his missing wife.
Image

Roselyn Sánchez

A stereotype of the Latin American woman, Roselyn Sánchez has made a successful and fast career in Hollywood thanks to her beauty, but it’s her acting, singing and modeling skills that have allowed Sánchez to differentiate herself from the millions of aspiring actresses that may look like her, but have no other skills than sexy curves and tan-mocha skin.
Image

In “Rush Hour 2,” Roselyn Sánchez showed her tough side as an undercover U.S. Secret Service agent who guided and instructed Chief Inspector Lee (Jackie Chan) and Detective James Carter (Chris Tucker) on their mission to solve an international money laundry case. In “Basic,” Sánchez played a tough Ranger who is the only woman in the Section 8 group led by DEA Agent Tom Hardy (John Travolta) and Sergeant Nathan West (Samuel L. Jackson).

Sánchez would certainly be a good actress to play Maria Santiago, even if we don’t know much about Dom’s wife.

Paz Vega

Although you have probably only seen her in “Spanglish,” this Spanish actress already has a 10-year long career in Spain, where she has won many awards for her TV and movie performances. Vega has those sad eyes, reminiscent of manga females, that make her look fragile and probably the reason why most of the roles she’s played are about normal people who are having a hard time in their lives.
Image

The picture of Maria that Dom carries in “Gears of War 2” seems to be a picture taken to Paz, so that’s why she’s a serious candidate for the role.

Vida Guerra

The strapping Delta-dog Dominic Santiago isn’t going to have any dog for a wife. In fact, a fetching, decorated war veteran can pull almost as much leg as Prince William or Justin Timberlake (but not more than both of them combined). Stroud’s got the bewbs, so it’s only proper that Santiago lives la vida to its fullest in the “Gears” movie. Don’t even do a casting call; just hire Guerra. Don’t know what she looks like? Well, actually I have no idea what her face looks like. Just think of it this way: Sir Mix-A-Lot must own a time machine, because he wrote “Baby Got Back” before Vida blew up. Can she act? Given her work on Speed’s “Livin’ the Low Life,” no, but who cares? How many women were in “Predator“? Exactly.

Gears of War Movie Update
Source: ComingSoon.net
March 30, 2008

ComingSoon.net got a chance to talk to Twilight producer Wyck Godfrey about the status of the proposed Gears of War video game adaptation. "We've got our script on and a director we're about to attach. We'll hopefully make that early next year for the summer of 2010," said Godfrey.

It was announced in March of 2007 that New Line Cinema (now a unit of Warner Bros.) had acquired the feature film rights to Epic Games' award-winning video game. Stuart Beattie was attached to adapt the project and Temple Hill Entertainment set to produce.

Since its debut in November 2006, "Gears of War" has broken sales records on the Microsoft Xbox 360, selling more than 4.5 million copies worldwide (it sold 3 million copies in the first 10 weeks after launch).

The game thrusts players into humankind's epic battle for survival against the Locust Horde, a nightmarish race of creatures that surface from the bowels of the planet. The story unfolds as a ragtag group of soldiers use every last ounce of strength to survive the onslaught from the forces of evil, which begins on the historic Emergence Day.

Cliff Bleszinski, the lead game designer for "Gears of Wars," worked in conjunction with Beattie to define a treatment for the film.

Bleszinski announced in February at the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco that a sequel to the "Gears of War" video games is in the works and is slated for a November 2008 launch

John Travolta - Marcus

Javir Bardem - Dom

Terry Crews - Cole (or Terry Tate)

Neal McDonough - Baird

Yun-Fat Chow - Kim

R. Lee Ermey - Hoffman

Scarlett Johansson - Anya

Roselyn Sánchez - Maria

Cole:

Michael Clarke Duncan. He's got a near identical face, and the muscles.

Marcus:

If you've ever watched any of the new WWE, you'll know who Batista is. Not sure if he can act though, seeing as most wrestling actors are crap.

Marcus - Bruce Willis (I know they don‘t really look alike but I think Bruce Willis is brilliant!)

Dom - Javier Bardem (The far left picture of him look very like Dom in my opinion)

Cole - Lester Speight (I always thought this guy could be perfect for Cole as I knew he voiced him and I remembered him from My Wife & Kids and thought they looked a lot alike)

Baird - Brad Pitt (I know he is not on the list but I think he would be prefect for this role)

Kim - Yun-Fat Chow (Does anyone care about Kim? LOL)

Hoffman - Tommy Lee Jones

Anya Stroud - Scarlett Johansson

Maria Santiago - Roselyn Sánchez
