Rod Fergusson, the Executive Producer of Gears of War 2, has announced that Epic Games is looking to make a change in the game's ranking system after the community complained for the sometimes unfair outcome of the TrueSkill level after a match. The studio is proposing an experience-based system rather than the current TrueSkill ranking system.

Hey all,

So we've been looking at all the feedback on our skill ranking system and we completely understand why simply making your TrueSkill level visible can be frustrating. The algorithm is complex, so it's not always clear how your rank will be affected by a particular match and your rank is based on the team's outcome and not necessarily your individual performance.

So we're looking to make a change.

What if, instead of skill rank, we instead showed your experience level. You would gain experience through your individual performance in Public multiplayer matches - the higher your score at the end, the more experience you acquire. Of course the experience gained across the different match types would be balanced so you couldn't just grind on the respawning game types to try and level faster. The experience requirements for each level would grow with each level gained (like a typical RPG) and we'd have 99 levels of experience for you to show off your leetness.

Generally speaking your level will always go up since you're always acquiring more score, hence experience, with each completed match. The only exception to that would be people quitting. Players that quit would gain an experience penalty that could cause them to be demoted. At the end of every match you will be able to see how much experience you've gained and how much further you have to go till the next level.

Since I know what one of the first questions is going to be, initially we wouldn't have achievements for gaining experience levels because of Xbox LIVE rules that require all post release achievements to be tied to new DLC content. But when new DLC is released, it's a whole new ball game then.

So, what do you think?

Thanks,

Rod.

How about not having a ranking system at all ?

That way those randoms that think their so pro at Gears of War 2 can stop bragging about their rank 4's even though im one. But still it gets annoying.

In Gears of War one it was much better without no ranking system or none of that. Thats what made the game unique and different from the other top online games.

In my opinion of course [lol.gif]

If we take away a reason to cheat (I.E. ranking systems, player vs player only achievements, top prizes for leaderboard leaders) then there would be significant changes in the amounts of cheating and hacking. Making the Seriously 2.0 spread over any gametype, multiplayer or not, was brilliant. Adding a ranking system however multiplied every reason to cheat. Isn't it enough to show people your Kill/Death, points per match/round, or Win/Loss ratios? bottom line those are the three "priority" rankings that any ranking system is based upon. An "experience" based ranking system of 0-99 is fine, but it should be the only stat linked directly to matchmaking. But thiscould lead to "abuse." What I mean is quitting four or five games in a row would only effect your experience rating, not your K/D or points per match (this is if the 0 kills, deaths, and pioints for the match weren't counted for those who left before games beginning.) Thus then losing some experience, at no cost to ones ratios, but then get matched up against those possible less skilled players. This could be total bubkiss, but that's what the ranking system in warcraft 3 was abused.

I think they should remove the current ranking system definetly. But to add another one, is wrong. Gears1 didn't have a ranking system, it was all about the seriously achievement. Then after that, public player matches that had rolling map lists, allowed players to join midgame, and continuous play (only one menu before next game began without having to reinvite, etc.) were excellent. That made the replayability of gears 1 superb. With that also in mind, game lobbies, not matchmaking, is what gears fans want. They want to play warzone, not guardian or execution. They want to play king of the hill, not submission. Epic took choices away from the players, forcing them to play their "new things." Epic, if you're reading, you have ruined your fan base immensley. Stop being stubborn and make the changes that will keep us playing.
