Let’s take a moment to look over the ranking system in Gears of War 2, to make sure everyone understands what they’re looking at when they check out other players online. Your rank in Gears of War 2 multiplayer is based on your TrueSkill rating, which calculates the relative strength of all players on Xbox LIVE.

There are five ranks total, and the first rank is achieved after you play your first multiplayer match. The more Gears 2 matches you win, the higher your rank will be, and your rank will go down when you lose matches. Rank is not affected by Horde Mode and private matches. The ranks are displayed in game using the icons to the left.

TrueSkill is like the chess ELO system, which tries to predict who should win the match based on the skill of the players. If you were predicted to lose and your team wins, then your TrueSkill goes up more than if you won and you were predicted to win. This holds true for the inverse scenario: If you were predicted to win and you lose, then your ranking drops more than if you were predicted to lose.

Rank is not a constantly increasing value, such as is typical in role-playing games (RPGs). Your rank may plateau or even drop as it closes in on your correct and accurate skill level. It will probably take tens of Public Xbox LIVE matches for your rank to move in one direction or another, and it may even take hundreds of matches to achieve a skill with the highest rank we offer, assuming you are good enough to get there.

Also, keep in mind that each rank icon represents a specific range or bucket of TrueSkill values, so while your skill is fluctuating in very small increments from match to match, your rank icon will only change when your skill moves from one bucket to the next. Therefore, your rank is not just about number of kills or experience or the amount of time played. It's an aggregated representation of your skill level based on your wins and losses during Public Xbox LIVE matches. And yes, quitting will lower your rank.

So that's it? It just calculates your truskill bases on your wins & losses? GAY! So what if I do super awesome and get like a 2.5 K/D ratio and like 8,000 points and we still lose. My personal stats don't matter? It's just about the W's and L's? Lame...

And if quitting lowers your rank, then I'm really f***ed. Half the time my teammates leave at the beginning of the match or the game is laggy as hell and I'm forced to return to my dashboard in frustration...

Ive only been booted from 2 games myself.... and the lag hasn't been an issue for my near as bad like others were saying......

But I truely hate when people leave when they think their team is going to lose, their team IS LOSING, or they just suck...... It happens only like 1 in 5 games but it sucks major balls when half your team dissapears....

yes i understand that but what if you are predicted to win but half your team lagged our or quit i mean i think they are going to win cause i am outnumbered i mean its so gay how people join then quit...

There does seem to be a flaw in this system. I agree that if you go in to a match and 3 out of the 5 leave due to whatever reasons you get punished. I gues if you are hosting and have rediculous aim, you could take out 5 people all 5 times and win the match. PPPPPFFFFTTT!!!!1111. The system needs to be updated. It should rely on personal stats as well as wins and loses.

This game should be less like Halo and more like Call of Duty as far as ranks and matchmaking goes. Call of Duty has vastly superior matchmaking over Halo...

My basketball coach taugh us something and forced us to follow it:

who cares about personal stats and ranks. stats should only be used to see your weakness and know what needs improved.

there's too much competition that it takes away the fun in the game. Screw the ranks, just play to win like in the old days.

rank means nothing u could always win because ur teamates are prob better than you and when it comes down to the real tournies or something like that and u dont got a good teammates then who is screwed rank means nothin i say again all about how YOU play the game and if ur good or not and know what your doing no matter what you do

How the ranking system is garbage

Thanks for the post tho,

it makes it look like epic knows what there doing but we all know they do not and the ranking system is still pure garbage
